Sirtris Pharmaceuticals CEO to Speak at Technology Review’s Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT on September 28th, 2006

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--Sept. 26, 2006--Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, the leading sirtuin therapeutics company, announced today that Sirtris CEO, Christoph Westphal, M.D., Ph.D. will be speaking on the Anti-Aging Research panel at the Technology Review’s Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT at 1:45 EDT on Thursday, September 28th, 2006.

New findings on diseases of aging are included at this year’s Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT, as an example of technological innovation to improve lives, create opportunities, and fuel economic growth. Dr. Westphal will participate in the Anti-Aging Research panel which will discuss recent discoveries about mechanisms of human aging and the potential to impact aging processes and diseases. Dr. Westphal will describe the scientific breakthrough of sirtuins, a recently-discovered new class of enzymes, and how Sirtris Pharmaceuticals is pioneering the development of novel drugs targeted to modulate sirtuins for the treatment of diseases of aging, such as diabetes.

Phillip A. Sharp, Ph.D., MIT Institute professor, Nobel laureate and Sirtris Scientific Advisory Board member will also present at this conference.

About Sirtuins

Sirtuins are a recently discovered family of enzymes that promote normal cellular function. In particular, sirtuins improve the function of mitochondria which generate energy in cells. When organisms face adversity, sirtuins are activated as part of a natural process that maintains healthy function.

Therefore, sirtuins are attractive drug targets which may be therapeutically beneficial for diseases in which mitochondria are dysfunctional, often observed in diseases of aging. These diseases include metabolic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, neurological diseases, and other mitochondrial disorders. Sirtuin therapeutics offer the potential for a novel class of drugs that can treat significant diseases of aging in a new way.
